Neymar ankle injury: Stomach-turning twist suffered by PSG star vs. Saint-Etienne

Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar was stretchered off after suffering a stomach-turning ankle injury in a Week 15 clash with Saint-Etienne.

PSG extended its lead at the top of Ligue 1 with a 3-1 win at Saint-Etienne, thanks to a brace from Marquinhos and an Angel Di Maria effort.

However, the contest was overshadowed by a serious 84th-minute injury to Neymar, who could now be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Brazilian forward writhed around in agony after his ankle gave way as his foot came down on the leg of the Saint-Etienne player who was making a slide tackle late in the second half.

Neymar’s PSG teammates looked on visibly concerned as the PSG medical staff ran on to help the forward leave the pitch, raising fears over his fitness for the remainder of the season.

Neymar took to social media after the game to reassure his followers, and has vowed to “come back better and stronger”.

“Unfortunately, these setbacks are a part of an athlete’s life,” he said on Instagram.

“Now you have to raise your head and move on. I will come back better and stronger.”

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino told reporters at his postgame press conference when asked about the severity of Neymar’s injury: “For the moment there is nothing to say. He felt pain from the twist of his ankle. [Monday] he will take exams and we will know a little more about his injury.”

Depending on the severity of the injury, Neymar could now be a doubt for PSG’s next Ligue 1 outing against Nantes on Wednesday.

Losing the 29-year-old Neymar would represent a major loss on paper, but he’s struggled to leave his mark so far at the start of the season with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi often stealing the headlines. But the trio has begun to click in recent matches, showing increased chemistry and dangerous combination play.

The Brazil international’s appearance against Saint-Etienne was his 14th of the campaign for PSG, and he has recorded three goals and three assists.
