Who plays on ‘Thursday Night Football’ tonight? Time, TV channel, schedule for NFL Week 15

“Thursday Night Football” viewers are going to be treated to one of the better matchups of the season in Week 15. Two of the best teams in the AFC West will be fighting to see which team has the inside track for the division title race.

Right now, Kansas City is certainly the favorite. They are on a six-game winning streak and are currently a game ahead on the second-place team in their division. That would be the Chargers, who could match the Chiefs’ record with a win on “TNF” and would overtake them in the divisional race because of tiebreakers.

Both of these teams have excellent, young quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes is the NFL’s half-a-billion-dollar man and while he has had his share of struggles this year, he has played better in recent weeks and is starting to get a bit crisper. Meanwhile, Justin Herbert has a massive arm and is proving to be a hyper-accurate deep passer in just his second pro season. If anyone can go toe-to-toe with Mahomes, it’s him.

Even with a loss, the Chargers will remain locked into a playoff spot until at least Sunday. But with a win, they can create some more of the chaos we’ve grown accustomed to seeing so far during the 2021 NFL season. Can they pull it off? Soon enough we’ll see.

Below is everything to know about Thursday night’s matchup, plus everything you need to know to watch the first Week 15ย game of the 2021 NFL season.

Who plays on ‘Thursday Night Football’ tonight?

  • Matchup: Chiefs at Chargers
  • Location: SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

The Chiefs (9-4) are traveling to Los Angeles to face the Chargers (8-5) on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 15. This game will decide whether the Chiefs will hold a commanding two-game lead in the AFC West with three weeks to play or whether the two rivals will be tied atop the division with the Chargers owning the tiebreaker.

The Chargers have already beaten the Chiefs once this year. They earned a 30-24 win against them in a Week 3 contest that saw Kansas City commit four turnovers to Los Angeles’ zero. Justin Herbert has had a strong second season with the Chargers, but he may need to get some help from his skill-position weapons to knock off the Chiefs.

Keenan Allen missed last week’s game while on the COVID list while running back Austin Ekeler was knocked out of the game with a knee injury. Brandon Staley expressed confidence that both would be able to play on the short week, and if they do, that will give Herbert enough fire power to do some damage against a Chiefs defense that has played extremely well in recent weeks.

Kansas City’s defense has allowed 17 points or fewer in every game of their six-contest winning streak. They have allowed exactly nine points in three consecutive games, but it may be hard for them to hold Herbert and the high-powered Chargers to that low of a point total.

As such, Patrick Mahomes will need to come prepared to help carry the Chiefs’ offense. He helped orchestrate a 48-point outing against the Raiders and will look to stay hot. He should get plenty of support from his run game, too, as the Chargers have allowed the second-most rushing yards per game this season (140.7).

The Chiefs are the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoff race entering Week 15 while the Chargers are the best Wild Card team at 8-5. Both are on track to make the playoffs and this could end up being a Wild Card preview depending on how the matchups shake out in the AFC.

NFL schedule Week 15

The Chargers vs. Chiefs game will be the first of the NFL’s 16 games in Week 14. The two teams are jockeying for position atop the crowded AFC West, but the Chiefs currently hold the advantage. If they’re able to win, they will set themselves up to win the division title for the sixth consecutive year under Andy Reid.

The two other prime-time games in Week 15 will also be divisional matchups, though they’re a bit less important. The Buccaneers have a commanding lead over the Saints in the NFC South, and they will have a chance to secure a division title with a “Sunday Night Football” win. Tom Brady still hasn’t beaten the Saints in three regular-season tries with the Bucs, so that adds importance to this matchup.

“Monday Night Football” will feature the Bears and the Vikings. The Vikings are fighting for a playoff spot and both coaches โ€” Minnesota’s Mike Zimmer and Chicago’s Matt Nagy โ€” are fighting for their jobs as the season comes to a close. So, from that standpoint, this game could prove critical.

One of the more amusing matchups on the docket is the Cardinals traveling to Detroit to take on the Lions. The Cardinals are arguably the best team in the league while the Lions may be the worst. That said, Dan Campbell’s bunch has played hard when healthy, so perhaps the Lions can keep this close early to make it interesting.
