Women’s World Boxing C’Ship: Nikhat, Parveen and Anamika storm into quarters


Anamika (50kg), Nikhat Zareen (52kg), Jaismine Lamboria (60kg) and Parveen (63kg) recorded impressive wins to move into the quarterfinals while Shiksha (54kg) and Ankushita Boro (66kg) bowed out of the World womenโ€™s boxing championships at Istanbul on Sunday.

Eight Indian boxers will fight in the round of eight.

Asian bronze medallist Nikhat tackled Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg well for a 5-0 victory. Nikhatโ€™s fine footwork and left-right combinations helped her stay 4-1 up in the first round against the Mongolian.

Nikhat boxed with confidence and benefitted from her fast punching to inflict a standing count on Lutsaikhan in the final round. She will face English Olympian Charley Davison.

Parveen defeated Youth Olympics and World youth champion American Jajaira Gozalez 5-0. The Indian took advantage of her long reach, excellent movement to deliver left-right combinations on Jajaira.

She will meet Tajikistanโ€™s Shoira Zulkaynarova.

Anamika gave a power-packed performance to trounce Australian Kristy Harris 5-0. The sturdy Indian rained punches to rattle Kristy early on and continued her onslaught to maintain an upper hand. She will face Colombiaโ€™s Valencia Victor.

Counterpuncher Jaismine made short work of Australian Angela Harries as the referee stopped the contest. She will fight American Worlds medallist Rashida Ellis.

50kg: Anamika bt Kristy Harris (Aus) 5-0; 52kg: Nikhat Zareen bt Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg (Mgl) 5-0; 54kg: Shiksha lost to Oyuntsetseg Yesugen (Mgl) 3-2; 60kg: Jaismine Lamboria bt Angela Harries (Aus) RSC-R1; 63kg: Parveen bt Jajaira Gozalez (USA) 5-0; 66kg: Ankushita Boro lost to Aneta Rygielska (Pol) 5-0.
